Game Audio/Music

Michigan Tech University’s Husky Game Jam: Fall 2014

Seasons from Andrew Villa on Vimeo.

An 8 hour game jam that had a theme of seasons. Puzzle based game: main character has to find his way back home traveling through portals that takes him to different seasons. Each season changes the map in it’s own specific way. To bring life to the game and give realism to the audience, I recorded/layered various elements of nature to create multiple environmental soundscapes and synchronized them with the specific seasons from the gameplay. With the character’s interaction with various environments, I recorded and edited footsteps that synchronized with the specific seasons. This game was made through libgdx.

Sound Design Competition – Game Developers Con: March 2014

A project that I entered & won for the Student/Apprentice Contest which was announced at the 2014 G.A.N.G Awards during the 2014 Game Developers Conference. I created the sound design for an imaginary video game called 70’s snow sports. A variety of mini games based on Olympic winter sports (skiing, speed skating, bobsled etc). Whatever that era means to me , is what I can interpret as I see fit. A series of events that needed to be heard throughout the soundclip. To achieve this I created original sound effects from field recording, Foley recording, and processing. To create a 70’s stylized theme, I directed a vocal artist,  in saying 70’s slang phrases that matched certain events within the project. I then edited, arranged, and processed the sound effects/vocal recordings in Logic Pro into one cohesive event.

SFX Development: September 2013-May 2014

I previously worked with the Husky Game Development enterprise on developing a game called Shattered Reality.  It is a first person survival horror game that is based in an insane asylum where the main character does not remember who he is or why he is there. Throughout the game you search for items that are scattered throughout the asylum that piece together the answers, all while trying to avoid monsters and ghosts. Here are a few examples of the sound effects that I have created.

 Theater Composition: Spring 2013

A Chalky White Substance from Andrew Villa on Vimeo.

In this project, I was a composer for a series of Tennessee Williams short plays. I composed the music for the play “The Chalky White Substance”. During this project I worked with the sound designer to collaborate our designs to work together in a symbiotically. I met every week with the director, showing examples of progress I made, taking in considerations of his thoughts and opinions, making sure to shape the music in a way that meets his direction of the play and fulfills the creative direction of my composing.

Song Remix: Fall 2012

I was given the rough tracks of a recording to edit and master to listening quality. During this project I used logic pro 9 and used various plug-ins to clean up and manipulate the tracks to get a creative and enjoyable sound.

Midi Orchestration Remix: Spring 2012

This is a creative experiment where I was given midi files that were arranged into a specific song. The midi tracks did not have specific instrumental assignments. My job was to assign each midi file an instrument, arranging them in any order that I want. I also had the freedom to change the rhythms, the pitch, and the length of the midi tracks to create a complete composition of my own creative thoughts. I used EastWest for my virtual instrument plugins. The specific style that I was aiming for was inspired by the opening theme song of Sweeney Todd.
